How To Become Comfortable In The Gym

Walking into the gym for the first time can bring up a lot of emotions. If working out is new to you, the gym can be an intimidating place. Full of obscure looking machines, dumbbells, kettlebells, all sorts of straps and bands, not to mention, extremely fit people; it can be a lot at first.

But everyone starts somewhere, and you can transform that anxious little knot in your stomach to feeling confident, in control, and excited each time you step foot in the gym. Exercise is so beneficial for your mental and emotional health, as well as your physical health, so don’t let your assumptions or fear hold you back from bettering yourself.

If you need a little nudge and want to start feeling like you own the place each time you enter the gym, read on for our tips on how to become more comfortable in the gym:

Ask For A Gym Tour

Whether you’ve had a membership and gone only twice, or you’re completely new to your gym, flag down a member of staff and ask to arrange a tour of the gym. The staff are there to help you, and are a fountain of knowledge when it comes to how the machines work, and where to find everything you could possibly need. This can help you feel more confident when you walk in to work out, because you already know where to find everything.

See A Personal Trainer

While we know personal training isn’t an option for everyone, most gyms will offer a free introductory session with one of their trainers. You can ask them anything and everything you’d like to know, they can help you learn how to start weight lifting, or help you try out some of the machines. This is a great way to give your fitness journey a kick start with some guidance from a professional.

Master Your Mindset

As important as getting physically comfortable in the gym, you have to get mentally comfortable. Remember; everyone is there for themselves, not to judge how fast you can run or how heavy you can lift. Any time you feel self-conscious, remind yourself everyone is too concerned with themselves to care what you’re doing.

Plan Ahead

Without a proper plan your time at the gym could end up choppy and not very beneficial. Before arriving, always plan what exercises you’d like to do, and how many reps and sets. You can keep your plan in the notes app on your phone, so it’s easily accessible, and you can maximise your time spent at the gym.
